"Ruffed Grouse" by Debbie Oppermann. While hiking a trail at Killarney Provincial Park, we could hear a rustling in the fallen autumn leaves in the woods. As quietly as possible, we ventured farther in and spotted this Ruffed Grouse, Bonasa umbellis which is commonly called Thunder Chicken, Partridge or Drummer. It has lovely dappled and barred plumage which blends into the landscape and as it is mostly a ground dweller in hardwood forests, is hard to capture, so was quite pleased with this image.
