Description
Like many sites in many cities, Rua Agusta in Lisbon Portugal looks best at night when the warm glow is very inviting! This was especially true during our trip to Lisbon when we had overcast and gloomy skies. View from atop the Rua Agusta Arch, it is even more romantic and inviting! Rua Agusta is one of Lisbon's main pedestrian streets with mosaic pavements, outdoor cafes, international shops, and the ubiquitous street artist and peddler. The Confeiteria Nacional was a fave spot for the local confection called Pasteis de Nata, an egg custard tart. (Side note: Pasteis de nata were created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the nearby Jeronimos Monastery in Belem. At the time, convents and monasteries used large quantities of egg whites for starching of clothes, such as nuns' habits. It was quite common for monasteries and convents to use the leftover egg yolks to make cakes and pastries, resulting in the proliferation of sweet pastry recipes throughout the country. The ones in Belem were better but unless you are prepared for a long tram ride, this is a great alternative.) There was also an Amorino gelato shop, a brand popular in Europe and for good reason. The service was spotty (read, surly) but the gelato was grand. Rua Agusta runs from Praca do Comercio on the waterfront at one end to Rossio square on the other end. Through most of the day and early evening, it is bustling with shoppers and crowded with diners enjoying an outdoor meal. The old architectural style, originally from the reconstruction of Lisbon made by Marquis do Pombal after the 1755 earthquake, is still intact, so you can see many of the buildings as they were in the 18th century. As the dining hours wind down, be more aware of some unsavory characters . FUN FACT: This street will be familiar to those who have seen the movie Gulliver's Travels, in which the Lilliputians wheeled Ted Danson, as Gulliver, through the arch.
