Description
Mission Point is located on the Saint Mary's River south of Sault Saint Marie. It is a popular spot for boat watching as boats approach and leave the Soo Locks. There is a small restaurant at the north end and the Sugar Island Ferry leaves from there too.
The Roger Blough was built in two parts and was scheduled for a summer 1971 launch. A fire in the engine room delayed that launch and 4 crewmen died from asphyxiation.
She set sail in 1972. She was designed to carry taconite and has a unique look. She was laid up from 1981 until 1987 when she again reentered service. She has experienced mishaps along the way including a few collisions and a lost rudder.
Her construction gives her a unique look. Her unloading boom is located in the stern, giving her deck an uncluttered look. With a beam equaling that of the thousand footer at 105 feet, but a length of only 858 feet she has a squat look. This combination gives her a capacity of 43,900 tons of cargo.

Thank you, Deb. She is the only ship with her dimensions on the lake which makes her very distinct.
