Description
Willow City, TX, is north of Fredericksburg and south of Llano on Highway 16. It is 4 hours away from my home in NW Houston and it is a road that runs 13 miles through a very rugged area of the Texas Hill Country. During bluebonnet season, which roughly runs three weeks, (from the last week of March to mid-April), we are bombarded with so many pastoral images involving bluebonnets and other wildflowers that we get inspired to getting out there and photograph them ourselves. Don't get fooled! In my experience as a landscape photographer, it is not easy at all to come out with interesting compositions involving the flowers and other composition interests such as dirt roads, fences, mountains, old barns, cattle, et al. To get these or most of them all together in a photograph will cost you several hundred miles! But it is certainly gratifying once you accomplish that task. Thanks for looking. FAA watermark WILL NOT show on final printed image.
Willow City Loop
Just outside of Fredericksburg heading toward Llano, Texas, the terrain changes from pastoral, gently rolling hills to a dramatic, rugged landscape of deep canyons, sky reaching jagged cliffs, meandering streams and phenomenal panoramic views. All year round you'll be amazed by this spectacular countryside, BUT during a good Wildflower Season (March - May), you'll discover "take-your-breath-away" inspirational natural beauty. A favorite location for a slow, lingering country drive is the "famous" Willow City Loop! This is THE iconic Texas Hill Country scenic drive! The private two-lane Ranch Road winds for 13 miles through some of the oldest and most unique geology in central Texas... through canyons carved by picturesque Coal Creek, and over hill tops where the views are stunning. In wildflower season the hillsides and low lying meadows are ablaze with the colors of a multitude of wildflower varieties... Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, Phlox, Coreopsis, Mexican Poppies, Sunflowers, Firewheels, yellow and white Daisies, Winecups, Horsemint, and Verbena! Mesquite, pecan, and live oak trees thrive, and there is an abundance of wildlife... the most beautiful Texas Hill Country you will ever experience!
All land along the Loop is privately owned. Residents of Willow City ask only that you keep moving along the narrow roadway, so they can access their driveways, and PLEASE, do not park your car on, or walk through the wildflower fields.
