Description
A timeless journey under the Rialto Bridge through a timeless city. The Gondola is probably the main symbol of Venice, the jewel of Italy's Adrdiatic coast. Historically Gondolas where quite different from today's vessels, they where much lower in profile and were mainly utility boats. The banana shaped boats are of more recent vintage, developed by the Tramontin family of boat builders, who still run one of only two active construction and repair facilitys in Vanice. Because of the vessel's unique shape and marketing image, the city has now decreed that in order to qualify as a Gondola the design cannot be altered or modified in any way. We had just finished our oblicatory Gondola ride in front of the Fish Market and where about to cross the Riato Bridge when I spotted this single Gondolier plying the Grand Canal waters under the famous Rialto Bridge and thought that is was a perfect way to show the esscence of this historic Venizian republic.
