Description
Some years ago, while visiting the Grand Canyon
My wife and I heard a long lost companion.
Its call echoed across cliffs, etched over time
By currents of water, eroding stones of lime.
The hawk announced its presence, for all to hear
As if to say, there's nothing to fear.
And just this summer, an adventure we undertook
To hike the Green Mountains from alpine to brook.
As the ground becomes moss, the trees become pine,
Changing scenery from mundane to sublime.
The view at once beautiful, serene and calm --
Silence once more broken by our hawk's song!
On currents of air, it circled in search
Of food, perhaps, or a companion of worth.
I imagined it saw us, not too far below
How strange we must look with our dogs in tow.
Where we found our water, it had to be treated
Boiled, filtered, or iodized, it is often needed
With each day's end, our tent we unfold
And ready the fire for warmth from the cold.
At night, the forest comes alive with sound
Crackling leaves like footsteps on the ground.
With time to reflect, I remembered the sound
Two times now, I had heard our hawks around.
The other day, while sitting in my room
I heard a familiar sound, sometime around noon.
Could this be, our companion once more,
Yes, even in this great city of ours!
The hawk called again, bold yet stark.
Here was our friend, perched near the park.
Near or far, it's been with us all the way --
A reminder of strength, and resilient to stay.
May you each fly high, on currents of air
And swoop when needed, a wing and a prayer.
