When I first arrived in Segovia at the Plaza de la Artilleria I looked first at the Aqueduct (how can you not?) but then up at the colorful houses on the hillside along the Calle de San Juan. Put the two beautiful sights together and this is the view you get! This was a very rainy afternoon so I was juggling my umbrella with one arm while trying to take some photos with the other. Segovia is such a visual treat. In 1985 the old city of Segovia and its Aqueduct were declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Within the environment of the old city stands a diversity of historic buildings both civil and religious, The Aqueduct of Segovia, located in the emblematic Plaza del Azoguejo, is the staple of the city. This plaza is on the other side of the aqueduct from this vantage point. The date of its construction was likely the end of the 1st century or early 2nd century and is a roman civil engineering work. There are about 25,000 granite blocks placed together without any mortar. The aqueduct has a length of 818 meters and consists of more than 170 arches, the highest of which is 29 meters at the Azoguejo, the most visited area. There are several fantastic viewpoints of the aqueduct, and the photographer never gets tired of this subject!
