Description
I watched these thunderstorms fire up late in the afternoon. These "ring of fire" storms occur on the outer perimeter of the capping high pressure centre. It is a balance between the capping inversion with the high and the intense surface heating and moisture found throughout the weather pattern. These thunderstorms only need a small leak in the cap to explode to the tropopause. They occur are regular intervals along the perimeter due to the wave nature of motions in the atmosphere. These particular thunderstorms never reached Singleton Lake. There were on 50 kilometres or so to the west but we never observed a single convective drop.
I was intrigued by the multiple heave rain shafts pouring out of the base of the thunderstorm. The accompanying colours were striking and needed to be recorded.
