Looking down a small valley, past the rubble mounds that were Indian pueblos, across pastures that were fertile fields, one looks at the broad Estancia Valley and the abandoned Spanish mission of Quarai, New Mexico.
The missions of Quarai, established in 1629, Abo and Gran Quivira (also called Las Humanas) are the abandoned remains of the first attempt to blend the expanding European culture and the far different Indian traditions. Many aspects of life in that time are still a part of the commingled cultural tradition that is New Mexico today.
