Prostate cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a prostate gland showing cancerous cells. The prostate is a small gland found just below the bladder surrounding the urethra, the tube urine passes through. This is an adenocarcinoma, a malignant (cancerous) tumour that arises from the lining (epithelium) of glandular tissue. The causes of prostate cancer are not known, but it is most prevalent in men over 50 years of age. Treatment is with hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery to remove the prostate. PAP (prostatic acid phosphatase) antibody stain. Magnification x570 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
