Description
Located in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, the Pool of Bethesda is where Jesus healed a paralyzed man according to the Gospel of John. The name Bethesda means either House of Mercy or House of Grace. The pool was a gathering place for the blind, sick and crippled during biblical times. It was understood at the time that when an angel stirred the waters, the first person into the water would be healed. The pool at Bethesda was considered a metaphor as there was nothing that fit its description near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem, but in the 19th century, the pool was discovered and the ruins are just as described in the Bible, with five porticos or porches. The archeological discovery proved that the pool of Bethesda was not some legend that had been added into the BIble, but a real place that had been left undiscovered for centuries. The pool began in the 8th century BC when a dam was built across the short Beth Zeta valley in order to capture rain water. This reservoir was controlled by a sluice gate that allowed the level of the water to be controlled and provided water for the city. This pool is not only mentioned in the Gospel of John, but is already referenced in the second book of King and in the Book of Isaiah.
