Description
Tough young men were hired to ride the best and fastest horse-flesh money could buy. Riders had to weigh less than 120 pounds. Twenty-five pounds were allowed for equipment which included four mail pouches, a light rifle, and Colt revolver in addition to twenty pounds of mail. keeping the total weight on horse to 165 pound. Each rider was issued a Bible to sustain their courage to make the ride through potentially dangerous country of Indians, bandits, deadly blizzards and exhausting heat.
This painting represents Look Out Pass which was connected February 1860, when the line was extended from Salt Lake City across Utah and Nevada to California. Keeping the coast to coast mail delivery time to a respectable 10 days.
