Description
What a place to live! This is Ponce de Leon Hall, the centerpiece of Flagler College in St Augustine FL. It was built in the Spanish Renaissance style as the luxury Hotel Ponce de Leon in 1888 by Henry Flagler the famed industrialist, oil magnate and railroad pioneer. The hotel was the first of its kind constructed entirely of poured concrete [National Park Service], using the local coquina stone as aggregrate. The hotel also was wired for electricity at the onset, with the power being supplied by D.C. generators supplied by Flagler's friend, Thomas Edison. When electricity was first put in Henry M. Flagler hired staff to turn power on and off for his residents, because the people staying at the hotel were too afraid to turn the switches on and off. But today it houses the female dormitories and the dining hall of Flagler College. The individual rooms consist of the former hotel rooms along with the former hotel employees' rooms. What a great sense of history to live here! It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Flagler college is located on 19 acres (77,000 m2) in the heart of historic St. Augustine, just four miles (6 km) from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a private four-year liberal arts college in St. Augustine, Florida, United States. It celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008. The college has been named in recent years by US News & World Report as one of the southeast region's best comprehensive liberal arts colleges, and is included on its list of "America's Best Colleges". The Princeton Review ranks Flagler in the top tier of southeastern colleges, and its campus as one of the most beautiful in the United States. It is currently included in The Princeton Review's Best 366 Colleges Rankings. Its 2010-2011 tuition was $15,860 (excluding room and board) and its acceptance rate is an average of 35 to 45 percent of its annual applications. Currently (and all too common these days in many schools) there is a scandal regarding altering student test scores, GPAs and student rankings to enhance the college's image, standing and reputation.
