Description
The color theme of this painting makes it match many current color schemes. Muted green leaves with bright "Dr. suess" green ribbon that is muted with burgundy brings this type of "older" design right into this century.
It is done with watercolors - many layers of watercolors in order to get the intense colors you see here. One of my favorite colors is "Alizirin Chrimson" and that color was used to shade the flowers.
The poinsettia flower is one of the most difficult to spell correctly, however it the most popular flower at Christmas. When I see those being sold in the stores, I know for sure that it's time to begin decorating for this most enjoyable holiday!
The poinsettia derives it's name from Joel Roberts Poinsettia, the first US minister to Mexico. He introduced the plant into the US in 1895. The bracts are often mistaken for flower petals, because of their placement and groupings on the plant, but actually are leaves. Growers have methods for making many variations of color in these plants, but the most liked are the deep red. The flowers are actually grouped in the center of the branch and are yellow. The flowers are called cyathia.
The plant is native to Mexico and they have been cultivated into over 100 varieties!
