Description
Plegmon eye inflammation. Artwork of a sagittal section through a human eye and the surrounding structures, in a case of a subcutaneous (below the skin) phlegmon inflammation of an eye cavity. The resulting swelling (upper left) has forced the eye shut. The term phlegmon refers to acute pus-forming inflammation, usually restricted to a specific region. Some cases are caused by bacterial infection, but many are not. Treatment depends on the severity, location and cause of the inflammation. Eye structures and facial bones are also shown. For a frontal view, see C014/5616.
