Description
ORIGINAL PASTEL PAINTING ON SANDPAPER / 11,7" x 16,5" / 2013
This is a pastel painting representing a picturesque square from Lyon, France, the Place du Petit College, situated on the Gadagne street in the old Lyon. I was inspired for this work by the colorful facades, the magical light and the totally special atmosphere of this place.
The Rue de Gadagne is a paved pedestrian street of the Saint-Jean quarter, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. It extends the rue du Boeuf and ends on the rue Lainerie that leads itself to the Place Saint-Paul. It is located in the center of Vieux Lyon and is part to the area which includes a mosaic of squares: Place du Change, Place du Petit College and Place de la Baleine in the extension of rue Saint-Jean. The street belongs to the zone classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Very representative of the Renaissance architecture of the neighborhood, the street is wide in front of the City Hall of the fifth arrondissement which is the former Jesuit college, and much more narrow in its northern part. There are two restaurants and the place is named Place du petit college.
Lyon , traditionally spelt Lyons in English, is a city in east-central France in the Rhone-Alpes region, situated between Paris and Marseille. Etymologically it relates to the Celtic God Lugoves, Lugh as does Laon and Leiden. The residents of the city are called Lyonnais.
The city is known for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lyon was historically known as an important area for the production and weaving of silk and in modern times has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France. It has a significant role in the history of cinema due to Auguste and Louis Lumiere, who invented the cinematographe in Lyon. The city is also known for its famous light festival 'Fete des Lumieres' which occurs every 8 December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights. (wikipedia)
