Description
A close up portrait of a pink peony in full bloom with petals layered in shades of pink and a golden yellow center. This flowering plant is native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America. Typically blooming in spring and early summer, it has compound, lobed leaves and large flowers that have been cultivated to many shades of red and pink, yellow and white. Peonies are of the genus Paeonia and were named after Paeon, a student of Asclepius who was the Greek god of medicine and healing. As the story goes, Asclepius became jealous and angry with his student and the god Zeus turned Paeon into the peony flower to save him from harm. Most common peonies are either herbaceous (non-woody) or tree/shrub types. with about 38 species. Some of the many flower types include Single flower, Japanese, Anemone, Semi-Double, Double and Bomb-Double.
