Description
This is a macro photograph of a pink lotus that I took on a large pond in the Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe, Illinois.
The lotus flower is an aquatic perennial. Sometimes mistaken for the water-lily, the lotus has a distinctively different structure. It also only comes in pink hues or white, whereas the lily comes in many different colors. The roots are implanted in the soil of a river or pond, and the leaves float on the surface. In some research reports, the lotus can control the temperature of itself just like humans and animals can.
Back in Egyptians times, the lotus flower was very important in their religion. Meaning creation and rebirth, it was a symbol of the sun, because at nightfall it closes and goes beneath the water and at dawn it climbs up above the water and reopens. It was the only plant to flower and fruit at the same time, as it would emerge as pure white from the depths of the muddy swamp and grow above the water.
I hope you have enjoyed this photograph and will share it with others. You can see more of my work on my homepage and in the various galleries and groups that I am a member of. Your comments on my work are greatly appreciated. Thank you for visiting.

Wow, I had to come and look at this. so that yellow part of the lily, I thought it was a plastic thing in the flower. It looks like a Hummingbird feeder guard, if you know what I mean.. Great macro work. Thanks for the features and visits and votes to my place Bruce.. This is just gorgeous! LF
