Description
Photographers catching the last of the light as the sun goes down at Land End Cornwall.
Lands End, a headland and small settlement in western Cornwall, is a good places to watch the sun set as it is the most westerly point of mainland Cornwall and England. It is on the Penwith peninsula, about eight miles west-southwest of Penzance, the last town in the far west.
The mighty headland of Pedn-Men-Dhu is between Lands End and the stunning Whitesand Bay Sennen Cove.
Standing on the cliffs or in the harbour, you can watch the day can draw to an end as Mother Nature puts on a spectacular show.
The Land's End Peninsula is one of the most beautiful, naturally wild and unspoilt corners of Cornwall and one of the most important and best loved landmarks in Britain - famous for its unique location and beautiful scenery.
As beautiful as the Cornish coast is, it has a darker side and has been the scene of many shipwrecks over the centuries. The rocky coastline, and strong prevailing onshore winds helped wreck many merchant ships and warships. It is rumoured that ships were sometimes deliberately attracted by false lights on the shore and has been said lights were used sometimes to lead ships into disaster. However, there is no evidence to support these ideas. As recently as 22 March 2003 a ship was washed onto the rocks just the other side of this headland.
RMS Mulheim was on a voyage from Cork in Ireland to Germany, transporting 2,200 tonnes of scrap car plastic. The ship ran aground in Gamper Bay, between Land's End and Sennen Cove, during which time there was "moderate visibility and fog patches". It was later discovered that the chief officer who had been on watch at the time had caught his clothing in the lever of his chair when trying to get up, causing him to fall and rendering him unconscious. By the time he regained consciousness, RMS Mulheim was already bearing down on the shoreline. Although the Sennen Lifeboat and Land's End Coastguard Cliff Team were able to reach the wreck quickly, the six man Polish crew of the vessel were airlifted to safety by a search and rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. The members of the crew were treated for shock at the Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station. There were no fatalities.
The Mulheim was left at the base of the rocks and over the years has been broken up by the force of the sea.

There are good sunset captures and then there are great ones--this is in the latter category! So beautiful, Terri! L/F
