Description
Photograph of Pemigewasset River cascades above The Basin in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire was photographed during New England autumn foliage peak colors in September.
The Pemigewasset River also known locally as The Pemi, is a river in the state of New Hampshire. The Basin is located in the Franconia Notch State Park not far from in Lincoln, NH. It is a large pothole fed by the Pemigewasset River and measures 30 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep. About 25,000 years ago when the Ice Age came to an end the water flowing from the melting glacier that filled Franconia Notch eroded the solid granite bedrock. During the thousands of years that followed sand and stones were whirled around by the force of the river causing an abrasive and boring action that formed the sidewalls smooth. The rock formation seen in the stream bed at the outlet has been known for generations as The Old Man's Foot.
Good light and happy photo making!

Juergen
