Description
"Peak Peek"
When you ski or snowshoe up to the Mayflower Amphitheater - one of Colorado's grandest venues, I think - you first see this view if you stay on the access road built and used by miners one hundred years ago. While only a hint of the visual feast to come, it shows in full measure why the journey can be just as alluring as the destination. That's pyramidal Pacific Peak (elevation 13,950 feet) up ahead, with a tiny glimpse of Atlantic Peak (elevation 13,841 feet) to the right.
These are among the highest one hundred peaks in Colorado, and form part of the spectacular Tenmile Range in the Colorado Rockies. In the meadow below, Mayflower Creek flows amid a giddy profusion of wildflowers in summer. But winter is my favorite season here. If the altitude doesn't take your breath away, the amazing snow surely will.
