Description
Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco shot at sunset
March 2007, took a trip out to San Francisco with Ellen to show her around where I grew up and to visit family. I had to hit up this little gem in San Francisco, the Palace of Fine Arts. We arrived late afternoon, walked around, took in the sights and sounds. Near sundown, I saw this shot - the sun peaking through the columns of the center dome. I knew it would be a high-contrast shot - perfect for trying out HDR. I didn't have a tripod so I used a wide-angle of view, wide aperture and fired off three quick shots, all hand-held. My first attempts to merge the exposures were a disaster, but after several years of refining my technique, I finally went back to the originals and reprocessed them with what I had learned in the intervening years. The result is the image you see here.
As for my trip with Ellen, I suppose it went well. She did marry me after all - whether our little trip to SF helped or hurt, you'll have to ask her.
