This Great Grey Owl and I stared at each other from less than ten feet away for what seemed like an eternity - I was mesmerized by the intensity of its gaze. Photographed by Ramona Johnston at in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada.
From the National Audubon Society's Field Guide to Birds:
Like other owls of the far north, the Great Gray Owl hunts during the day, often watching for its prey from a low perch. Because it spends much of its time in dense conifers, it is often overlooked.
