Description
This beautiful cap rock (caprock) formation, suggestive of a graduation cap, is located in Escalante Canyon near Delta, Colorado. In the fall and spring the striated red rock stands out starkly against the surrounding complimentary, muted greens of the sage brush and grays of the grotesque leafless trees to create an impressive vista with a backdrop of deep blue sky. Overlying cap rocks such as these are made up of harder more weather resistant rock than the weaker rock that lies below them. A long time ago the softer rock was cut away mostly by Escalante Creek when it was running a full capacity.
It is rumored that Ben Lowe, a legendary local outlaw in the area, used to jump his horse onto this ten foot square cap rock and back over the three or four feet to the main part of the formation to show off to people who came into the canyon. Ben Lowe was eventually killed in a gunfight with a lawman over the stampeding of some sheep over a cliff and the killing of a mule.
