Description
There are a large number of Allium species, including edible onions, garlic and chives as well as many ornamental plants. Typically they produce rounded heads of flowers, often in rosy purple shade, but there are also yellow-and white-flowered species, Some are small-growing and suitable for the rock garden, while others make excellent plants for the middle or back of borders. Allium produces its eye-catching heads of mauve-pink, starry flowers on stems 3ft. or more high, while another type grows to only 8in and has loose clusters of golden yellow blooms. Many alliums make excellent cut flowers. They are usually long lasting in water, and the dried inflorescence that remains after the blooms have fallen can be used successfully in dried arrangements, too.
