Located just North of Newport, Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural area is most famous for its historic lighthouses, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and Yaquina Head Lighthouse, which can be seen many miles away as you are driving southbound on US 101.
Yaquina Head Light is Oregon's tallest and second oldest continuously operating lighthouse. It's quite a climb to conquer 110 of the 114 pretty elegant looking steps in the lighthouse, so take it slow. Once you get to the top, you can take a peek into the light itself. Over 250 panes of glass make up the light, and it was definitely a technological wonder for its time... still worthy of an 'awe' today.
The lighthouse sits on a peninsula jutting out a mile into the ocean, so the view is pretty spectacular on a clear day! Fog can get pretty intense at Yaquina Head Light, but it can roll out as fast as it will roll in, and if you are patient and simply wait until the fog rolls out, as it eventually will, you will be rewarded with some absolutely breathtaking scenery!
