Description
This trio of orchid blooms accented against a glazed ceramic planter is one of many wonderful species of orchids in The Botanical Building in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Balboa Park was named for Spanish maritime explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa. and is one of the oldest and best parks in the United States. The Greek myth of Orchis explains orchids' origin. Orchis, the son of a nymph and a satyr, came upon a festival of Dionysus (Bacchus) in the forest. He drank too much, and attempted to rape a priestess of Dionysus. For his insult, he was torn apart by the Bacchanalians. His father prayed for him to be restored, but the gods instead changed him into a flower. Long lasting orchids are one of the largest families of flowering plants and a symbol of luxury!
