This lovely spray of unique, multicolored burgundy, pink and yellow orchids was on display at the Botanical Building in Balboa Park, San Diego, California, accented by the soft hues of a glazed ceramic planter pot. The Greek myth of Orchis explains orchids' origin. Orchis, son of a nymph and a satyr, came upon a festival of Dionysus (Bacchus) in the forest. He drank too much, and attempted to rape a priestess of Dionysus. For his insult, he was torn apart by the Bacchanalians. His father prayed for him to be restored, but the gods instead changed him into a flower. Orchidacea are one of the largest families of flowering plants; there are twice as many orchid species as bird species, and about four times as many as mammals. They symbolize luxury.
