Description
Once a beautiful shade tree in the summer, this old cottonwood found itself in deep water - or at least in water - when Walnut Creek Lake was created by the damming of Walnut creek in Sarpy County, Nebraska, as a flood control measure. The stark lines of its bare trunk and the few remaining branches add interest to the eastern shore. Located south of Papillion, the lake, actually a 105 acre reservoir, now serves as the main attraction of a popular local recreation area. Visitors must remove any trash they bring in with them, as the 450 acre park is a "pack in, pack out" facility. Many different leisure activities are available. A hiking and biking trail runs around the lake which is stocked and is popular with fishermen in all seasons. A playground, camp ground, and picnicking area are also available.
