Description
This was a commissioned piece for the CPRE UK. I was asked to paint a scene depicting rural England to raise awareness of the impending loss, or changes to rural environment. I used to walk along this lane frequently and I chose to paint this view because it was shortly to change. For sadly, the lovely old lady living here, had just sold her beautiful house, which had been in her family for many generations and contained a lot of personal memories and history. She was living without electricity and her water came from a well in her garden. When we last spoke, she was trying to live in just in one room, as the roof was at risk of caving in...you may see how it bows in the middle. These old timber-framed buildings were not only beautiful, but wonderful in that the structure accommodated movement in the land, but now that they are so old, they do need to be maintained, which is expensive. This house needed a lot of work to restore it in order to be habitable. I hope that the new owners did this sensitively. I left the UK shortly after and never saw this view, or the old lady again.
