Description
A watercolour of High street Kilkenny Ireland at nightfall.
Kilkenny is a popular tourist and creative centre and has retained many of its ancient buildings including the12th century Kilkenny castle set in extensive parklands which is open to visitors.
Kilkenny is the anglicised version of the Irish Cill Chainnigh, meaning Cell/Church of Cainneach or Canice. This relates to a church built on the hill now containing St. Canice's Cathedral and a round tower.
Kilkenny began with an early sixth century ecclesiastical foundation within the kingdom of Ossory
. Following after the Norman invasion of 1171, Ireland was under an alternating level of control from Norman lords and the King of England. Kilkenny Castle and a series of walls were built to protect the burghers of what became a Norman merchant town.
In 1609 King James I of England granted Kilkenny a Royal Charter giving it the status of a city. .
