Description
Delphinium
Family : Ranunculaceae
There once was a Dormouse who lived in a bed,
Of delphiniums (blue) and geraniums (red),
And all day long he'd a wonderful view,
Of geraniums (red) and delphiniums (blue).
~ A.A. Milne

From the Greek delphinion = dolphin-like (the spur on the wildflower resembles a leaping dolphin; it is missing in most hybrids)
Ancient Greeks used the delphinium seeds as an antidote for a scorpion's sting, and during the Middle Ages, the seeds were ground into a poultice for head lice.
In the 16th century, the delphinium was grown by the herbalist Gerard, who produced its double flowers. While these blooms are basically blue, there are also shades from white to deep purple, in addition to which wild species even have red or yellow flowers.
This macro of a delphinium bud about to open looks like a miniature planet, in a universe of its own.
