Description
New York City’s apples to Los Angeles’ oranges and all that lies between.
I have stained many carpets after coming home from playing in North Carolina’s red clay and learned never to touch the red ants in Texas. I have watched as the ice fishers caught Salmon on Michigan’s frozen lake near my family’s old restaurant and I have learned to fly fish in Pennsylvania. I floated many summers through the Lake of the Ozarks on a pedal boat with my grandparents while sipping Manhattans together. And have walked to the Dam Lounge, or the Lounge by the Dam in Warsaw, Missouri. I watched jack rabbits run through what looks like Mars on Earth, in the Four Corner’s Utah desert and watched many sunsets that were accompanied by New Mexican winds where I would imagine the million air balloons as they glide across the sky from Santa Fe. I heard my distant echo’s return through the Carlsbad Caverns, and I have hiked down into the deep Grand Canyon. I have even lost my breath while running in the highest altitudes of Estes Park, Colorado. Many times as a child we would cross the border through El Paso, Texas to shop at the Mexican markets. Up north, if we couldn’t drive across to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, we’d toss rocks in just to say we touched Canada all the way from New York.
I have never crossed any major ocean. But as a kid moving through and looking at everything around me, I’ve traveled a million miles and I know this country well.
I have lived many places throughout my life. In these paintings, landscapes from my travels are rearranged and objects are oddly paired to allow the viewer into the chaotic, surreal and shamelessly beautiful American world I find at every turn.
