Description
Lotus blossom with leaves, a bud, and a seed pod, in a pond garden. Pennsylvania, early Summer. I really like how this shot turned out, with a little cleanup help from PSE. The black object near the middle of the flower is some kind of insect, perhaps (fittingly) a scarab beetle, or perhaps a dragonfly nymph. At the end of the nymph stage, they climb onto floating vegetation to complete the transformation to the adult stage. That day I noticed several nymphs on waterlilies, odd-looking dark creatures with heads the size of the adult. The scientific name for these large and beautiful aquatic plants is nelumbo, which appear in only two species, n.nucifera, native to southeast asia, and n.lutea, native to southeastern North America. Also known as the American Lotus, n.lutea was used by Native Americans as a food source.
