Description
Mt McKinley now renamed "The High One" by presidential proclamation 2015. In this photo both the North and South Peaks are visible an occurrence not guaranteed. The mountain is so massive that it creates it's own weather system that oftentimes obscures it
to many who make it a must see on their Alaska visit.
The round peak is the South peak also the higher of the two, The North peak though is the more difficult and less travelled. The climbing season lasts about 90 days from sometime in April through July depending on weather conditions. Approximately 1000 people will try to summit and only a fraction of those will make it to the top.
Denali is one of the "Seven Summits" the highest mountains on seven continents and in mountaineering is considered a major accomplishment.
It was renamed Mount McKinley for then-presidential nominee William McKinley by prospector William Dickey during the 1896 Cook Inlet gold rush. Dickey named the peak because McKinley championed the gold standard rather than silver . Alaskans and climbers call the mountain Denali.
