Description
"Mourning Dove In A Flower Planter" by Debbie Oppermann. This wonderful capture of a beautiful Mourning Dove nesting in a metal hanging flower planter by my front entrance in Guelph Ontario Canada was taken in the spring as she had made her nest and was protecting the eggs. Mourning Doves, Zenaida macroura, are light grey and brown, eat almost exclusively seeds, are very strong fliers and can reach a speed of 88 km/h. They are prolific breeders and can have up to 6 broods a year although she had only one brood in this particular nest. They will pretty much nest anywhere as this capture shows. She decided to have her babies right in a high traffic area and never moved as we went in and out, but when she had her two babies, we used the garage entrance so as not to spook the babies into leaving the nest too early. She was very serene, calm and always seemed to be smiling! This image won in the Urban Wildlife category for the Canadian Wildlife Federation annual contest and was published in Canadian Geographic magazine.
