Mount Vesuvius eruption of 1872. Eruption column of ash and smoke towering over Mount Vesuvius, in the Bay of Naples, Italy, following its eruption on 26 April 1872. This photograph was taken at 3.30pm local time. This eruption lasted for several days and killed 20 spectators and destroyed several villages. It was followed by a caldera collapse on 1 May 1872. Vesuvius is most famous for its destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD, but has erupted many times over the centuries. Vesuvius began forming around 25,000 years ago. As of 2012, its elevation is 1281 metres above sea level.
