Description
Mount Stephen, located in British Columbia's Yoho National Park, was named in 1886 for George Stephen, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The 10,495 ft peak is composed primarily of shale and dolomite, creating the mountain's classic Canadian Rockies appearance. Part of the same stratigraphic unit as the nearby, famed Burgess Shale, Mount Stephen's trilobite beds contain exemplary fossilized specimens from the Cambrian period.
