The catholic cemetery 'St Louis Cemetery No.3' in New Orleans is eerily pretty. Many old tombs dating back into the 1700's. It is impressive to see the way this "city" was laid out and, as usual, the difference between the areas of the more affluent compared to those of the poorer citizens. The tombs themselves range from shabby to elegant.
There is a lovely statue of Mother Teresa there. She is standing in her peaceful pose. Coins are scattered near the statue, as if people had made some wishes. Mother Teresa's story took place recently! 1n 1910, she was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Yugoslavia, became an Albanian nun and founded The Missionaries of Charity. She spent her entire life helping others.
The inscription on the bottom of the statue reads:
"If you pray you will have faith, and if you have faith you will love. And if you love you will serve. And if you serve you will have peace."
Like so many cemeteries around the Big Easy, St Louis cemetery No.3 is chock full of soaring dramatic mausoleums that have fallen into aging, cracked atmospheric perfection. This place is macabre and magical.
