Description
When I arrived here, I was a bit surprised to see just how little water was running over the falls. This area had gone for weeks without any rain. That had dramatically lowered the water levels in Kitchen Creek. It was very interesting to see all of the moss that is usually hidden under swiftly flowing whitewater. I was able to shoot from a different angle to capture Mohawk from a fresh perspective.
Mohawk Falls is the first waterfall you will encounter, if you begin your hike from the top of the Ganoga Glen Gorge in Ricketts Glen State Park. This beautiful wilderness site is not too far from the enlarged Lake Rose parking area.
This photograph was captured on Monday, October 4th, 2013, on a solo autumn hike through Ricketts Glen. The shot was captured with a Canon EOS 5D camera through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens, at the 17mm focal length. A 77mm ND-8 Neutral Density filter was mounted on the lens. The camera was securely mounted on a Manfrotto 055CLB tripod with a Manfrotto 222 “Pistol Grip” head. A remote shutter release cable was also used.
Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.

Oh wow....I just looked at, commented on, and loved your most recent image taken from this same spot...and I love this one every bit as much!!! :))) They are different, indeed, but they each have their own appeal! I have to say, this is truly gorgeous with all those orange/red leaves and moss!!!! :)))fv
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you most graciously, Laurie! The shots were taken just six days apart. I was disappointed that there was so little water here, so I made a second trip, after the area got a pretty decent rainstorm. Wonderful wishes, Gene

Love the green - red/gold diagonal on the river bed. It's a bit more water-trickle than waterfall, but that just makes it a different style of beautiful... Great capture, Gene! F&V#10
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you, Richard! It was nice to be able to shoot from places that would have been inaccessible when the water levels are higher. Best wishes, Gene

Gene I'm so impressed at the depth of field in this and the composition is quite unique. great work, voted
Gene Walls replied:
Thank you so much, Douglas! A small aperture on a wide lens does the trick every time. This was shot from where I would have normally been under water, except after a very dry late summer and early fall. Kindest regards, Gene

Gene, this is gorgeous the low water allows the leaves to sparkle!..v/f/g+
Gene Walls replied:
Thanks a lot, Kandy! I really like your "glass half full" perspective. It was an amazing day to be there, The fall colors were dazzling. Kindest wishes, Gene

Beautiful colors, but wow.... low water!!! I was thinking about tomorrow. Just poured here at home, but I doubt it did there!
Gene Walls replied:
Thanks a bunch, Lori! It rained a little there yesterday, but not enough to make a big difference. I was planning to hike the Glen after Monday's rains moved through, but then I noticed how quickly the leaves were falling here. I was afraid the trees might be bare if I didn't get up there right away, so I went early. Now I'm thinking it might have been better to go next week (as I originally planned), when the water levels will be a bit higher. A lot of the leaves haven't changed color yet, especially lower in the gorge. At least the low water let me find some new shooting angles at several of the falls. I hope you will find better conditions when you go. Kindest wishes, Gene
