Description
The Navajo character of Coyote is sometimes a trickster, a "clown," a fool, an anti-hero, sometimes a sort of folk hero, and possesses great powers. He is a symbol of madness. "If a coyote looks you in the eye, you will go mad." Sometimes he is accompanied by the whirlwind, another symbol of madness.
Spider-Woman taught the Navajo to weave. In Dawn's woodcut, she depicts Coyote jumping over Spider-Woman's loom, his whirlwind is yanking out the threads of her design and spinning them into chaos.
The Lakota, too, have a story. There is a woman weaving. Every time she gets close to being finished, Coyote comes along and destroys her design. Each time, she starts again and each time she gets closer to finishing it. Some day she will finish it, and that will be the end of the world. So Coyote is also the spontaneous, creative force that keeps the world alive.

Beautiful woodcut, Dawn. I especially love the colors and the variety of art forms you used to depict this symbolic story. The changing design and shape of the border is just another feature of your keen ability to tell a story with art.

Wow Dawn, you have so much amazing work I didn't know which piece to comment on! But I'm sure this would have required the hand of a very experienced artist, so congratulations!

Thank you dear Dawn for your kind remarks about the photo of the embroidered chairback which appears to be a Native American design. Glad u like. :~)). The Coyote is a trickster...as you said, and I will be sure to stay away from him for now anyway. Smiles... (I especially do not want him to look me in the eyes because I am barely sane as it is...). Blessings to you and family, now and always. You always make my day happy when you comment. I LOVE your work. Your new headshot is nice. Perhaps you have already mentioned it, but I did not see it (yet)...but anyway, who is in the picture with you?
