Description
Add some nature to your home, office or business place. Enjoy the simple things in life!
A summer garden scene with a colorful Monarch butterfly sitting on a orange zinnia flower. Butterfly's seem to love bright colored flowers.
The vibrant colors of the 30 species of flowering annuals in the Zinnia genus make them garden favorites. Zinnia are easy to grow, thriving in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 10 and if you plant them, butterflies will almost always show up for some nectar. One standout Zinnia may be better than the rest for attracting butterflies, but selecting from the remaining cultivars is not so easy.
Spring azure, tiger swallow and some other butterflies prefer tall flowers as they forage for nectar while other butterflies stay close to the ground. Standard Zinnia cultivars grow 1 to 3 feet tall and spread 1 to 2 feet wide. The tallest Zinnia cultivars are State Fair and cultivars in the Splendor and Ruffles series. Mid-sized cultivars Pinwheel,Pumila, Rose Pinwheel and Starlightplus cultivars in the Pulcino series grow about 15 inches tall. Dwarf cultivars, those less than 10 inches tall, include Dreamland, Dasher, Peter Pan and Lolipop, plus Short Stuff,Thumbelina and Fantastic in the Small World series.
