Modigliani was painting a seated portrait of a friend. When the friend got up to leave, Modigliani's cat hopped up on the chair and struck the same pose as the previous sitter. Modigliani couldn't resist. He grabbed a fresh canvas and soon had captured the cat's slender, elongated features.
