San Diego de Alcalá (also named Mission San Diego) is considered the first church in California and it’s called the Mother of the Alta California Missions. Founded on July 16, 1769 by Father Junipero Serra the mission represents the beginning of the mix of religious and political impacts of Spanish conquer for California on locals and the birth process for California before it becomes as a state.
In 1834, California Governor Jose Figueroa offered up the local Mission for sale after Congress passed An Act for the Secularization of the Missions of California. After the United States annexed California in 1846, the mission was used by the Army. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln gave the missions back to the Catholic Church. Mission San Diego de Alcala was completely destroyed by the time. The church set about rebuilding it in 1880.
The Mission San Diego de Alcala would become an active church again in 1941, serving under the diocese of San Diego. In 1976, Pope Paul VI decreed that the Mission San Diego de Alcala be designated a minor basilica, which increased the mission's profile and importance.
Individual confessions are held on Saturdays. And there are several areas for votive candles - they are always burning. The candles and matches are provided, all you need to do is put in some money through a slotted hole in the candle structure, light your candle and say your prayer.
