The most visible (but not the largest) sand dunes in Death Valley National Park, California, are the Mesquite Flat Dunes. The dunes appear out of nowhere in the middle of the basin.
A hike into the Mesquite Flat dunes can be as long or short, arduous or easy as you wish to make it. There is no official trailhead, nor do any maintained trails lead into them. Instead you may park along the shoulders of Highway 190 and improvise your own route into this remarkable 14 square mile landscape.
It is almost impossible to have a disappointing experience among these waves of sand, unless you head into them during a sandstorm or at midday during the summer.
