Melusine, a character in European folklore, is identified as a spirit of sacred fresh water springs and rivers. When classically displayed in full figure, she is usually depicted as a fish or a serpent from the waist down; less often, she is represented as a full-fledged mermaid. Sometimes Melusine sports wings or a double tail as well.
According to the most well-known legend, Melusine is one of a set of triplets, the others being Palatyne and Mellor. Their beautiful mother, Pressyne, was a fay creature who sometimes took the form of a human woman. King Elynas of Scotland saw her in that form in a forest while out hunting. He was instantly smitten with the lovely creature. Pressyne agreed to marry him if, were she to give birth to any children, he promised never to enter her chamber during her confinement or when she bathed the children. He broke his promise and Pressyne took the three girls to Avalon to be brought up as magickal creatures.
This is a portrait of the young Melusine, painted with blue woad for a ritual, as she might have appeared while growing up in Avalon.
