In the heart of the Serengti Plain, is an expansive area called the Gol Kopjes, lying just east of the Naabi Hill area, where we were camped. Within this area resides many prides of lions. This stunning male was most aware of our approach and rose to greet us. There were numerous females in the rocks behind him who paid little if any attention to us. Their stomachs were full and obviously they had hunted earlier in the day. This beautiful male put on a show for quite sometime leaping from rock to rock, rolling in the grasses below the kopjes and surveying the savannah for any invading challengers.
Adult male lions can weigh up 550 pounds and can, in the end, overtake a cheetah due to its larger lungs and stamina. Cheetahs frequently lose the chase even though they are the fastest recorded land animal in the world as their strength lies in short bursts of extreme speed.
"Simba" as the locals call the male lions is one of the most widely recognized animals in the human culture.
