Description
McGraw Tower is the iconic heart of Cornell University's central campus (Ithaca, NY), and the tower's 21-bell chime the school's pulse. Since the tower's 1891 opening, the Cornell Chimes have marked campus time and played daily concerts. The original 9-bell chimes, donated by Jenny McGraw, first rang at Cornell's opening in 1868. The chimes were housed at ground-level stand and later in McGraw Hall before finding a permanent home in Library Tower--renamed in 1961 McGraw Tower. Chimesmasters play three daily concerts during the academic year--less in the summer. Since 1869 the morning concert opens with "Cornell Changes"--popularly known as "The Jenny Rag." Traditional concert staples include the "Alma Mater" and "Cornell Evening Song." The 173 foot tower, designed by Cornell alumnus William Henry Miller, has been the target of a few college pranks over the years. A pumpkin appeared atop the spire in October of 1997, and in April of 2005 someone managed to attach a disco ball to the spire.
