Description
My love series is an exploration of the the notion of sacred love, sacred sex and soul mates. I have always believed that there is twin soul for everyone. I believe lots of fairytales are based on this notion, finding your one true love. For a long time I have believed that Jesus and Mary were a representation of this principle. That they have a great love that transends time and place. I also believe that their love represents the balance of masculine and feminine and that for any type of relationship to work there needs to be this balance. I think the feminine has been very badly represented through the ages and still is to this day. As a child going to church I was given to options as a child when it came to my femininity. The Virgin Mary, who was so pure and good it seemed an impossible task to live up to her. Or Mary Magdalene who was a prostitute apparently and bad, but luckly she had been forgiven. However she was not someone you should aspire to. In the church men got to do/be everything. It never sat well with me and and I never accepted it. Everything about going to church was about fear. I lived in fear if I didn't say the lords prayer that the devil would get me. In the midst of all the fear Mary Magdalene and Jesus fascinated me. Mary was at the cross and the first person to see Jesus on Easter Sunday. I drew my own conclusions and thought Jesus must love her very much. Over time I discarded the notion that she was a prostitute but had been very badly represented by the church in their need for power. I think Mary Magdalene and Jesus represent the love of loves and the need for the balance of masculine and feminine to be fully restored. To me sex or sacred sex is the coming together of soulmates on the highest level and is not just physical but spiritual something that I am sure Jesus and Mary Magdalene experienced in their cave way back when. Artist Statement
From the day I picked up a brush I felt I had found my reason for being.
Sandra Marie Adams lives on a small island off the coast of New Zealand.
Sandras work is often driven by a strong autobiographical element. Her paintings are mostly an outward manifestation of the world inside her head. Sandra loves to always be challenging herself as an artist. As a result her subject matter tends to varied. Sandra describes herself as a colourist and uses colour to evoke mood and emotion.
Waiheke Island, where she lives, features strongly in her paintings. Often the beautiful seascapes are used as the background for a story, comment or observation.
Sandra has always been passionate about the injustices in the world and the interplay of good and evil. Sandra often explores these themes in her art. Sandra has also endlessly questioned the validity of the conventional biblical stories. She enjoys portraying her own controversial version of the truth through her art.
