Maria da Fonte - the revolt of women
Artist

Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
This painting belongs to the serie "Mujeres del pais de Abril" and is my homage to Maria da Fonte who named the 1846 revolt un Portugal, a popular uprising led by women, for many women and not by one, hundreds of women with scythes, pikes and setback.
The instigator of the riots initials will have been a village woman named Maria, born in Fontarcada, and therefore would be known by the name of Maria da Fonte. As the initial phase of insurrection has a strong female component, the revolt ended up being known by that name. The uprising spread later to the rest of the country and caused the substitution of government.
